Life crises as opportunities for development – Ruediger Dahlke

The Chinese sign for crisis consists of two parts: one symbolizes danger and the other symbolizes opportunity. This means that a crisis is a dangerous opportunity.’

The origin of the word comes from ancient Greek. “Κρισις, krisis, originally – opinion, decision, assessment; later – aggravation’, indicates that a situation is at a peak and a turning point and that it most often requires a reaction.

We grow through crises and experiences. They make us look for answers. To wonder, to explore new territories or to return to forgotten knowledge.

During childhood illnesses, puberty, starting school, finishing school or studies, becoming independent, getting married, marriage, pregnancy, parenthood, building a home, employment, children leaving, menopause, retirement or death of a long-term partner.

Some of these experiences are natural and some are part of our culture.

Every experience has the potential to enrich us with personal growth or to weaken us. Not only ugly or unpleasant, but also beautiful, pleasant. Our reaction to the challenge directly affects the result as well as the value we will get from that experience.

Through crises, we learn to recognize priorities in our lives, to value life itself more, to build or strengthen relationships with partners, children, friends, to find faith and strengthen self-confidence, to be more careful with our health, to be less shaken by small things and not to take everything too seriously.

It is important to consciously process crises because taught by personal experience, overcoming those obstacles or challenges, finding a way and answers through our own process of questioning, we become more self-confident, more resilient, and the knowledge we gain is imprinted in us forever and we can rely on it again and again in case new crises.

How can we face a crisis? What does it mean to recognize it as a chance and by working on it, through questions and searching for answers, to get to the hidden treasure that it carries with it?

My path is not much different from many.

I grew up surrounded by diseases and medicine people, by the suffering of loved ones, fear for their health and mine, and the desire to do something. All of that led me on the path to medical school, continuing education in an internship and working in health care facilities.

Faced with the real suffering of people and dramatic clinical images, in conversations with those beings who suffered, I remembered the words of a dear young woman who was dying of cancer.

“How could ‘this’ happen to me?!”

How does that happen? What did we wrong to get this from God, fate? Does it have anything to do with anything earthly?

Due to my own sufferings and fears, I went in search of solutions. Solutions are found when we ask the right questions and wait for the answers.

These were the answers that gave me much more material for active participation and work. And it seemed plausible to me.

It took years, decades and a little more, for me to stand without fear from what I felt and experienced myself:

-we have much greater strength and power than we are aware of and that we even allow ourselves to have it,

the power of change lies within us, and with that change, our condition changes, the world around us,

no one possesses so much knowledge that they can predict life expectancy, even in the most difficult situations,

-we always have the option to choose to be that one per million “miracle” or spontaneous remission,

life is an ineffable force that is not easily to vanish.

A very important insight for me was that we don’t have to do anything by free choice!

To help ourselves, to heal ourselves, to search and examine.

We have every right to live our life as it is or as we perceive it.
With all depths and heights. To be moody, angry, resentful, to blame others for our condition and to avoid responsibility.
Or to be happy, carefree and satisfied.

Every life, with its challenges, is an endless field for growth and development. Our development. And it always will be, whether you live it consciously or not.

If we decide to let some invisible force rule and guide, we will not go wrong. The Force will guide  us and our lives. We will experience many unexpected things and be deprived of many things.

As in a consciously led life after all. It is impossible to have all the experiences that exist in one lifetime.

The difference between those two lives is our experience and desire to be either active participants who dare to choose paths and experiences or to helplessly surrender to the storm.

First then, when we come to a situation that is unbearable for us and when we want to find a solution, we will do so.

If we are not on that path now, it is not a sin or shortcoming.

When we are ready, we will embark on the only path that exists and has been talked about since the beginning of time: the path to ourselves.
